What’s New on Paramount+ in February 2023
The gang’s all here for the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard (Feb. 16), as the Paramount+ spiritual revival of The Next Generation finally goes ahead and gives fans what they wanted all along by bringing onboard most of the rest of the bridge crew from the good ol’ Enterprise NCC-1701-D, plus Seven of Nine for some reason.
For the first two seasons, Picard struck me as a good hook–Patrick Stewart as an aging Admiral Picard, trying to give his legacy meaning–in search of a show. Plot lines felt perfunctory (the Borg are back!) or arbitrary (the less said about the twist in the first season finale, the better), and it generally seemed less confident, daring, or essential than its contemporaries, Discovery and Strange New Worlds.
But I still have a metric ton of affection for the crew of TNG, and all my favorites are back to finally bid farewell to the franchise (serious this time), so I’ll be watching. If nothing else, it’s gotta be a better swan song than Nemesis.
