this article is an exercise in navel gazing of the self-righteous 'literate' classes. In their idealised slower 'deeper thinking' era, people were subject to institutions, self-expression was not for individuals (unless they were artists, of course). Those calling for the past seem to forget that virtues of the past hide many of its vices. Some of the present's vices – self-focus and 'narcissism' – are only one side of the self-expression coin, of which the other is individual autonomy. I'll put up with endless posing and drivel on twitter (or even 'packaged self'), if it means increased self-expression and potential for greater autonomy for anyone.
