very good distinctions, common sense really. it's about control over what, how and with whom you share things. Autonomy.

sweet. apart from the fact that 'social media' is losing its meaning, as it's being peddled by people whose sole experience online is, let's say, twitter. oh well. blippy seems to be missing the point – sharing purchasing patterns with the world, not the most empowering thing I can think of…
The point is making use of your data and benefiting from before anyone else does. Sharing is not necessarily part of that benefit. -

no shit, sherlock. Lot of the survey findings are obvious to anyone who ever wanted to buy/download a song online.
the proposal should apply the movie industry which should have done this a long time ago. They'd rake in billions by making all movies available for download for a very reasonable price at the start of the shift to digital format/downloading. There'd be less attraction in bittorrent downloads, which just filled in the gap the industry let happen. wonderful story! must try it next time I see a branch. It is anti-McDonald's model with its 'post-industrial' approach to flavour, food and customers. Annotated link http://www.diigo.com/bookmark/http%3A%2F%2Fknowledge.wharton.upenn.edu%2Farticle.cfm%3Farticleid%3D2415

personal data and self-analytics misunderstood and twisted. my first concern is that my data works for me before it does for anyone else and that I am in charge of access to it and sharing it on my own terms.

the best quote is the one about the idea of the user being sovereign, which has transformed the meaning of free speech. Once the individual has greater autonomy vis-a-vis platforms, it's harder to pursue the Decider model, let alone consistent censorship. But isn't achieving this what the distributed model of the internet is all about? Seems the web has cut that development short.
