the best way to run a start- up is as if it were a charity. actually makes sense. VRM Hub and VRM NEA have no business model as such, trying to make something work first. Make something work, money will follow. The trick is spotting where.

this is a nice guide but why does everything have to be corporate? Blogging or twittering? individuals communicate, corporates ‘message’ at us, so how can they do either?

Inverted commas laden with implication there – I take your point, though; I’m not suggesting that organisations will use Twitter for anything other than furthering their own goals (ultimately) but then that’s what they’re there for, right?
To suggest that indivduals don’t ‘message’, though, is naïve, surely? Where do you draw the line between P2P conversations and P2P marketing?

Well, most of this blog is about how companies are not capable of communicating and addressing this issue. In the world where individuals can read/write, a company cannot communicate as a collective entity. Only individuals can communicate. So if companies want to communicate they have to do so as individuals – ‘fracturing’ their brands etc. Without that, they are just ‘messaging’, i.e. broadcasting (press releases, marketing campaigns, etc)
And I am not sure what you mean by P2P marketing, sounds like another buzzword to me.

Peter, just came across the post I did some time ago that deals with the ‘messaging’:

I don’t think messaging’s inherently bad – conversation is better, but there are plenty of reasons why you might want to differentiate between the two; this is part of the reasoning behind creating a corporate Twitter account.
P2P marketing is what you do when you’re talking about your consulting services to someone else
